WORTH FIGHTING FOR The Yarmouth-to-Maine ferry, as an international link, is by definition a federal responsibility. Under the Constitution, it is a federal concern. That it was downloaded to Nova Scotia, to fund provincially, and that we took it without a fight, should be the real source of outrage on behalf of Nova Scotians — not that the province is trying to expand the economy with a direct link to a market of 330 million people. How much does New Brunswick pay for its international crossings? How about Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, B.C. or Yukon? Answer: $0. How much economic gain do those provinces and territories enjoy from direct links to our largest trading partner and its market? Billions. I understand the anger towards the ferry, that it is a money pit, but it is anger misplaced to the extreme. That the passenger numbers may be low this year speaks not to the utility of a ferry link to America, but to the instability that has plagued the service since the feds made their grand exit. Nova Scotia needs to fight for federal funding for what could be a vital link if only it were properly funded, stable and affordable for the users. A rosy scenario that will never happen if left to the province. Mike Murphy, Dartmouth
